Dmitry Dance (Art) Theory
"theory |ˈθēərē; ˈθi(ə)rē|
noun ( pl. -ries)
a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, esp. one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained
the Space: Everything that happens on stage (the performance, the song) Whatever is above the stage.
Thoughts soon to be organized.
Music the core of what I do. I hear a song and I'm so in love with what I hear my body's automatic response is to move, interpret.-This is the song I solo to. This is my performance piece. The song that touches me so much I cry.
But what am I really doing?
I read once, that dance brings us closer to the song. The song and I are one. Music cannot be seen. I make it visible.
The key is not to dance, it's to create with the music.
Music compliments the artist, as the artist compliments the music. I don't want to see a dancer. I want to see an artist. But an artist that completely understands the music.
What is the role of music?
Music is not the sketch/the outline, I do not just simply color it in.
Music is not the director either.
It is a 50/50 collaboration.
Its not that I must have control over the music either. There should not be a power struggle between both sides (the artist and music). Once you feel that you are higher than the music, you create things that are not there, you have destroyed the bond. Nor should the music have complete control over you. There has been music that has swallowed the artist as well. Then you might ask, what if I hear something and truly feel it in my soul and make a low beat a strong beat? This comes back to having a true collaboration with the music.
And say you just like a certain way of dancing no matter what the song is, well, then you're neglecting music. You may want to dance, but once you neglect the music, What are you dancing for?
So, still where do we sit?
The music is doing the same as I. Its just as organic as I. It hears me. It sees me.
The music is creating me too. That is why I can listen to a beautiful song over and over again. The song is breathing on the other side.
I inhale, It exhales.
But remember, You are just as free as the music. Do not use mathematics. This is where brilliance comes in.
When a viewer can see the two individuals clearly, the artist and music, and both are contrasting in complimentary colors (Green and Red).
Both of you are creating whatever lies on top of the stage. Both of you are creating the Space.
Then I must ask What Am I doing? How am I moving like this?
I turn on a song, and I just move. How do I come up with moves that I haven't even thought about?
Who is controlling this part? (Shit, I'm gonna need that Psychology of Dance book, :P )
Because I'm familiar nor studied the body... I will just say the mind.
AH HA! - Here, this begins to talk about what I'm trying to get at:
I feel this is absolutely the second most important aspect to dance. Where to begin?
Positive and Negative Space/Energy.
The most common idea is that an artist is positive space/energy. She draws around the negative space. Line, Silhouettes, in which some people see but I don't.
Dance is as abstract as music.
